Let Me Inertain You

So far as I’ve been able to discern, we’re only really here to try to entertain ourselves until we’re no longer here.

It also occurs to me that anything we busy ourselves with that doesn’t help us achieve that goal is a distraction meant to confuse us into believing otherwise—that there is some greater meaning. This notion makes all of us believe, in some part, that enjoyment is frivolous—something meant to pass the time between laboring and making a “valid” contribution to society. Even those who desperately attempt not to buy into it bear the guilt of generations of beleaguered souls haunting us with antiquated notions that were never right—shamed for the imaginary slight of our hedonistic nature by the omnipotent inventions of our imaginations turned into what we can only believe to be the voices of our conscience. Mind you, not for the grandest of indiscretions which might contribute to the detriment of others but rather the simple pleasures of life that disrupt the flow of hardship being passed downward which allows for the silken cream of prosperity and contentment to be pushed to the top. In turn, those who bring the most joy of entertainment are held in high regard, but because we cannot fully accept this simplistic principle, and we love to confuse ourselves that there must be more to it, those who bring the most misery are also deemed important and regarded as leaders—religious, political, or industry—who do the hard, serious, “important” work of causing the greatest harm. For what? I’ve never been able to fathom an answer to this question. For everything we’ve done—every decision that brought us to this point—every tired cliché that prods us like cattle to serve a “greater” purpose, I am not entertained.
