When this many people are standing on the wrong side of what will be our sad history, they often feel as bold as they appear to be due to the validation of their numbers and the affirmations of those who knowingly lead them astray. This is generally how we judge the immensity of a tragedy—how many people are willing to cheer on the thing that is destroying what they mistakenly believe they’re protecting?
The human ego is so desperate to be validated that it will allow the rest of a person to believe anything someone says, so long as the first words they hear from that person are a justification of their most heinous beliefs.
