Octothorpe Oblivion

#Oblivion We are not doomed to repeat the past; we choose to. The defining similarity in all of humanity is the belief that we are all so very different that we could never truly coexist. It is the most defiling of self-fulfilling prophecies.

There is no point in distinguishing lies from the truth once it is all confined to perception. Minds made up to believe or reject without regard for evidence cannot be persuaded by even their own personal witness. Accept what we prefer, reject all else, this is the motto of our time as it was in so many eras before. Even in obvious repetition, we lack the wherewithal to see that every time a group of intrinsically fallible humans decide their way must be the only way at any cost, the cost is always greater than that which we can stomach, and no way is ever found to be universally correct for any amount of time.  And so, we allow ourselves to break it all down again to give us something to do in building it back up, and so on and so forth, until there’s nothing left which can be rebuilt.

Death on Vinyl

I’m still waiting. What will our legacy be? A friend of mine posted something on social media that reminded me of this post. It seems as a relevant thing as ever to continue to consider. The things we prioritize have no intrinsic value. If it continues, all we will leave behind is the wreckage of selfishness and possibly still not enough cash in a 401K to cover the monetary debt of our choices, but definitely not enough to pay the debt of conscience that the future will be forced to feel because of those same choices. If the soul is a reality, we’ll be leaving ours here with our counterfeit morality.

I’m waiting for that record scratch moment when something so insane and horrible happens that the whole country stops and goes “OK, wait, this is not cool!” and we can all agree on a more reasonable compromise for the better.

It may be too late. We may be past our ability to be affected as a race. You cannot change the world with words that the masses refuse to hear or believe based on antiquated traditions. We pan the solutions and stagnate progress for fear of being obsolete, unnecessary, unneeded, unwanted. We are ironically obsessed with our legacy while, at the same time, we build one we will surely be ashamed of whether or not we will ever have the courage to admit it.

What If We Are All the Same Person?

This was my first Thought & Other Absurdities blog post over 2 years ago. I still truly believe all of this, and I think it applies more every day as we see how destructive humanity’s hate for itself is and has always been. This world may have been built for no reason at all, and it may mean little to nothing at all aside from what we decide it means. We desperately need to decide that it means more than our absurd tribalism, more than finding a way to force our will on others, more than trying to lay claim to superiority and ensure that ourselves and those we feel are most like us have more seats at the table. This place is the most unimaginably beautiful fucking buffet with endless seating unless a majority of us, who can choose to make it any other way, choose to make it less than what it truly is.

If any of this is too vague, my apologies. To be clear, we need to eradicate bigotry in all of its forms.

What if we are all the same person, but we just look and act differently based on a multitude of superficial external and situational variables? What if the real point to existence is figuring out that not only are we connected, but that we are really just one being, that we all experience everything that happens to us exactly the same, that our only difference is what we experience and how that changes us, that all of our doubt, mistrust, hate, all of our longing for connection and our feelings of isolation and apathy are misplaced, and we actually could not be anymore alike or connected, that empathy for others is the closest we get to loving ourselves and the only emotion that approaches an understanding to our existence?

Ruse Your Illusion

Bank: Why don’t you let me hold onto your money for you?
You: Um… Why would I do that?
Bank: Well, so I can charge you to do it, of course!
You: Wait, what? What are you going to do with my money?
Bank: I’m going to invest it and make lots of money with it, and I will keep that for myself.
You: Well, then why would you charge me?
Bank: Because, fuck you, of course!

Man created money, government, and religion. These come from our minds, our imaginations inspired by what may or may not be divine influence and our self-decided needs. They were meant to invoke and satisfy our desire and need for fairness, kindness, and motivation, to prevent the overwhelming sadness that the knowledge of the brevity and possible finality of this existence and the apathy that understanding would cause, all which benefit the preservation of society.

Now, they are only used to dictate an individual’s value. Our worth is decided by people we put in charge of things we made up, things that have only subjective, perceived value, things that have no intrinsic utility, imaginary things used to determine the worth of real people with invaluable life. How very little we are willing to accept in trade for that life.

Here is our vast depth of thought, a majority of our finite…
